About Language Center Universitas Sumatera Utara
Language Center was established in 1986, initially as part of the USU Faculty of Letters, to provide English language training for USU teaching staff who were to continue their master's and doctoral studies abroad. In the late 1980s, the Language Center occupied its own building on Jl. Abdul Hakim No.1 USU Campus and its status changed to an educational support institution at the University level. After successfully organizing the English training process for USU teaching staffs, the Language Center opened the BIPA (Indonesian Language for Foreign Speakers) program, but in recent years the BIPA program has not been held anymore.
Due to the demand to expand the scope of duties, this language institute developed to provide other language services in the form of language testing (TOEFL). The USU Language Center continues to grow with a broader scope of work where the task is not only to provide English language training but also other foreign language training and language services such as translation, interpretation and others.
At this time, the most popular program offered by the USU Language Center is the TOEFL Preparation training for both regular and special groups. While the other main activity of the Language Center is organizing the TOEFL Prediction test.
After the significant development of the Language Center and in line with the policy that every graduate student who is going to the green table must have a minimum TOEFL score of 450, the Language Center currently has two divisions, namely the certification division and the language course division.
As an institution that has been trusted and forward-looking. The USU Language Center constantly strives to improve the quality of its programs and professional performance in order to provide better services to the community. Therefore, in 2010, the Language Center conducted visionary refreshment, managerial improvement and personnel preparation as well as new programs that are more specific, actual and relevant so that one day it can become one of the most respected language institutions in North Sumatra in particular and in Indonesia in general.
