Socialization of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) Competency Strengthening activity held on Friday, 9th June 2023 at USU Language Center was attended by the Head of USU Language Center, Dra. Roma Ayuni A. Loebis, M.A., some lecturers from the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FIB - USU), and featured a distinguished speaker, Mrs. DR. Cut Novita Srikandi, S.S., M.Hum, who currently serves as secretary of the BIPA Institute, Universitas Muhammadiyah Sumatera Utara (UMSU).
In her presentation, DR. Cut Novita Srikandi, S.S., M.Hum. explained about the philosophy and the main objective of Indonesian for Foreign Speakers or called as BIPA program, namely as a form of promoting Indonesian language and culture as well as solid cultural networks to foster mutual understanding among the participating countries. The fact that the Indonesian language has the fourth-largest number of speakers in the world, including speakers outside Indonesia, and the high interest in Indonesian makes BIPA program increasingly attractive to foreigners and local teachers in Indonesia.
In this activity, the audience learned various things related to BIPA teaching, including how to comprehend the characteristics of BIPA students, how to apply and use the proper methods, techniques, and principles of BIPA teaching and learning, where teachers teach foreign speakers using Direct Method, such as audiovisual media in order to that foreign speakers/ learners can practice Indonesian properly in everyday life.
Mastery of Indonesian language containing four aspects of language skills (Listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in the BIPA program has seven competency levels, namely BIPA 1, BIPA 2, BIPA 3, BIPA 4, BIPA 5, BIPA 6, to BIPA 7.
The activity ended with taking a group photo and certificate submission to the speaker, DR. Cut Novita Srikandi, S.S., M.Hum., by the Head of the USU Language Center, Mrs. Dra. Roma Ayuni A. Loebis, M.A.
