Have you ever seen a banner in a supermarket and felt that Rp.99,990 is cheaper than Rp.100,000? Have you ever wondered whether the word discount is truly real or just a suggestion? Or questioned why TV commercials for certain products are aired repeatedly? Or why billboards for the same product are posted along the entire road?

Are you surprised to read news about a person with disabilities being able to outsmart a non-disabled individual? All of these phenomena are known in linguistic science as hypnolinguistics. Hypnolinguistics is a combination of hypnosis and linguistics (the study of language), focusing on the use of language to influence the subconscious mind. In hypnolinguistics, language techniques are employed to modify thought patterns, behaviors, or emotions through verbal suggestion, often occurring in a state of relaxation or trance, as in hypnosis.
It is widely understood that hypnosis is a method of activating or programming the subconscious mind. Hypnosis is a mental state in which a person is in deep relaxation and heightened focus, making them more receptive to suggestions or commands. In this state, individuals are more likely to accept instructions that can influence their thoughts, emotions, or behaviors.

The human mind is divided into two parts: the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. The conscious mind is responsible for analyzing, thinking, and gathering information received by the brain. In contrast, the subconscious mind is more subtle and still influenced by childhood memories even into adulthood. The subconscious also has the ability to provide intuition—the capacity to make sudden or spontaneous decisions—because this intuitive thinking style involves using the "inner voice" as a guide in making decisions or taking actions (Syaifuddin, 2016).

Language and the Subconscious

The subconscious mind, as a part of human cognition, cannot be accessed or controlled consciously. It is believed to influence how people respond to their surroundings and everyday experiences. Therefore, language and the subconscious mind are closely linked because language often serves as a bridge to access thoughts, feelings, and urges that individuals may not be fully aware of.
This means that language is not merely a communication tool, but also a medium to express and influence what resides in our subconscious.
In essence, hypnolinguistics is an approach that combines the power of language with hypnotic techniques to influence the subconscious mind and achieve desired changes in a person’s life. On the positive side, it is often used in therapy and personal development. However, on the negative side, refined and persuasive language can also be used to influence someone in such a way that they begin to believe that the words they hear or read are absolute truths. Eventually, something expensive appears to be cheap. Something previously unnoticed becomes a top choice. Words leading to harmful actions may sound like pleasant promises.

Conclusion

Although intuition often functions as a spontaneous response to situations, it is actually the result of subconscious processing of information accumulated from life experiences. One way to strengthen intuition is by increasing self-awareness—the more we become aware of our feelings, thoughts, and reactions to various situations, the less likely we are to be hypnotized by words.
